ASEAN Diplomacy Under Anwar Marks a Strategic Win for Regional Stability

JAKARTA, 29 July – The successful ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand, brokered under the leadership of ASEAN Chairman and Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, is being hailed as a significant milestone in Southeast Asia’s evolving regional diplomacy.
International analysts see this as a demonstration of Malaysia’s growing influence within ASEAN, with Anwar positioning himself as a credible mediator amid complex border disputes.
“This move elevates Malaysia’s diplomatic profile. By facilitating this ceasefire, Anwar showcases that ASEAN-led solutions can still work in an era where great power politics often overshadow regional voices,” said Dr. Helena Morton, a Southeast Asia specialist from the London School of Economics.
The ceasefire is not only a symbolic victory for ASEAN but also a test case for future regional conflict management, with the potential to shape how the bloc navigates tensions in the South China Sea and along other contested borders
